Why Knowledge Does Not Always Become Capability
A student may understand a subject but struggle to apply it outside an examination. An employee may complete a training programme but feel uncertain when faced with an unfamiliar task. A person may have a clear ambition yet struggle to take the next practical step.
These situations raise a question: what helps knowledge become capability?
What does capability mean in practice?
Knowledge provides understanding. Capability involves being able to draw on that understanding, exercise judgement and act in a particular situation.
Consider communication. Knowing the principles of good communication is useful. Applying them during a disagreement, explaining a difficult idea or asking for help requires practice, confidence and attention to the circumstances.
The question therefore extends beyond “What has this person learned?” to “What can this person do with that learning?”
What might stand in the way?
There may be several explanations worth exploring:
Too few opportunities to practise in realistic situations.
Uncertainty about how learning relates to everyday tasks.
Fear of mistakes or criticism.
Limited feedback, guidance or access to resources.
A workplace or learning environment that discourages initiative.
These are possible starting points for enquiry. The combination will differ between people and institutions.
A useful study should listen to the people involved and examine their circumstances before recommending an intervention.
A question for educational institutions and workplaces
When someone struggles to apply learning, another lecture or training session may help. So might supervised practice, clearer expectations, constructive feedback or a change in the environment.
Understanding the gap helps us choose a more relevant response.
For an educational institution, the question could be:
What do students find difficult when they try to apply their learning to practical tasks or prepare for work?
For a workplace:
What helps or prevents employees from applying newly learned skills in their daily work?
